At its centre are the Regent’s Canal/Camden Lock, and the extensive surrounding markets offering more than 1000 stalls with cafes, bars and shops. The lock itself was built in 1820 on the Regent’s Canal, which allowed goods to be transported from the London docks to the rest of the country. Interestingly, Stable market is the site of mid-nineteenth century stables which accomodated over 800 working horses which pulled barges and wagons. As the importance of the canals decreased, Camden declined but from the 1970’s, it rose as a hub for alternative culture, artists, deigners and musicians with famous music venues like the Dingwalls which became epicentres for the punk and rock scenes hosting bands like the Clash, The Sex Pistols and Blondie. Recent years have seen expansion of the market and massive investment in the historic canal-side area.

Below you will find a suggested walk which takes in the famous Primrose Hill viewpont and Regent’s Park.

Connections

Alternatively, there is a fabulous walk all along the Regent’s Canal to pretty Little Venice and Paddington Station. If you want to, you can also leave the canal at the top of Regent’s Park and walk south to tour the parks meadows and lake, or alternatively north up Primrose Hill with its famous view and charming shops and colourful houses as my walk suggests.

You can also walk the other direction along the canal to King’s Cross and visit the atmospheric warehouse shops of Coal Drops Yard and Granary Square.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="611" height="1024" at Camden Town tube station for this circular walk. Turn right out of the statin and walk up Camden High Street. Keep going until you have crossed the canal then turn immediately left through the gap. This brings you into Camden Market. On your right is the market hall – a good place to start. After exploring the market, return to the canal towpath and continue until the third bridge, leaving the path up onto the Gloucester Road. Without crossing the canal, continue then take the first left into Princess Rd, then the first right into Chalcott Road. You will see the beautiful Chalcott Square on your right, which is worth the small detour. After walking round the square, keep straight on to your right, then turn left into leafy Chalcott Crescent with its beautiful colourful houses. At the T-junction, turn right on the main road crossing over, then just before the next road enter Primrose Hill park through the small gate. Walk up the hill to the viewing point, where you will almost certainly see people gathered to enjoy the spectacular view. Next keep following the path round and back down the hill to leave the park at the bottom corner to your right. Cross the main road and you will see a small path straight ahead going down to the right to rejoin the canal. For a shorter walk you can chose to turn left here and walk back to Camden Lock with the canal on your right. To extend the walk, turn right here along a particularly pretty section of the towpath and at the second bridge, a stone footbridge, leave the canal and cross the bridge into Regent’s Park. If you keep bearing right you will reach the landscaped boating lake. There is a very nice playground here and cafe, and you can also hire a pleasure boat. Retrace tour steps over the water and continue following the path nearest to the lake on your right then as far as possible following this trajectory, cross follow the path straight across the park and you will reach Gloucester Gate. Cross over the Outer Circle and take the road opposite. Use the crossings to proceed straight over the two junctions and into rather charming Parkway shopping street. This will bring you out back at Camden Town Station to complete your walk.

Camden High Street is bright and bustling and has a real youthful and trendy vibe.
